I like the idea of the posts you put in around the shop. A lot of builders
would not do that just to save under 50$ in lumber. But that is
ridiculous!! I did similar in my 24×30 shop. I sistered three 2×4’s
together on each wall of the corner. So there was about 5-6 2×4’s in each
corner. It dramatically increased the rigidity and strength of the
building. There is no reason not to beef up first floor buildings.
Good thinking on the double top plate. I’m not sure if you can get away
without it actually. You’d have to check code. The double top plate adds
enormous strength because it overlaps at the corners and also ties the top
plates of the walls together.
