I’m reaching out to my viewers, asking how I should build the metal handrail on the upper section of my spiral stairs.

I have a section of the garage that I call the loft, and I’d like to install a railing around it so people can’t fall out of it. How? Not sure. I need to find the railing, and figure out how to design it and attach it. Then build it. Simple right?

How should I build the metal handrail for my spiral stairs?

I have recently done some heating and bending of UHMW. Pretty cheap plastic, that you can buy in many shapes up to 8′ at least.
I bought some black and heated it with a blow torch(heat gun might be better for you) and bent it and clamped it.
Maybe you could buy some rectangle and use a router for the upper edges? With a heat Gun maybe you can bend it around and screw it down, and heat it some more so it forms a new shape.
Just a thought. McMaster Carr carries this stuff in many shapes.

Cool. Thanks Paul, I haven’t heard or worked with the stuff, but I’d like now. I think I want to keep the railing matching the spiral stairs, I know its just a garage, but just feel like having them look exactly the same, like it was meant to be there.

I think it would be nice to weld some upright standing posts along the side which have a ring on top which is wide enough to hold a thick cord; I was thinking of a cord they use to keep ships on their place! With a diameter of 3 inches! That will give more security while mounting the stairs! You can also weld a ring in the middle and have two cords running up the stairs!

Hrm, curious. This sounds cool. By cord do you mean huge 3″ rope? And use that as a sort of sub-handrail below the handrail? I’ve always liked the look of that huge thick rope. Thanks!

They sell similar railings at Home Depot or Lowes you could possibly modify to fit?

Good idea, it would be way easier to take an existing railing and modify it.
